dear solitude

how dare you challenge
this heart made thick with strength
how dare you kick dust on the old fire
where numbers once gathered
how dare you force a lonely march
over old trail where branch once broke
beneath the feet of those i love

bring on your biting cold wind
unleash your long dark night
show me now and walk me along
guide me to those places you claim
let me see your evidence
let me hear your accusation ring out
in echoes off those distant hills

for this land is my soul where all once lived
still now it is mine after they have gone
so prove me wrong in this same place
where love still lives
where pain moves through
as birds from tree to tree
never finding rest for long

so take my arm
to test its resolve
race these fields with me
and you will see
that i will tire but will not fail
for i keep this land as free of fear
so face me here and do your best

but i warn you now
no enemy comes
this far into my soul
and that i would have you
as a friend
so we will fight and you relent
and allies we will be

guardian of confidence
come try my soul
then join me here
as my companion
as teacher
as healer
and priest
